How to Dispute Errors on Your Credit Report

Studies show that 1 in 5 Americans has an error on their credit report. Here's a step-by-step guide to identifying and disputing mistakes that may be dragging your score down.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, approximately 20% of Americans have at least one error on their credit report — and many don't even know it. These errors can range from minor inaccuracies to serious mistakes that significantly lower your score.

Step 1: Get Your Free Credit Reports

You're entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three major bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — through AnnualCreditReport.com. Review all three, as errors may appear on one bureau's report but not others.

Step 2: Identify the Errors

Common errors to look for include: accounts that don't belong to you, incorrect personal information, duplicate accounts, accounts incorrectly marked as late or in collections, and outdated negative items that should have aged off (most negative items must be removed after 7 years; bankruptcies after 10).

Step 3: Gather Your Documentation

Before disputing, collect any evidence that supports your claim. This might include bank statements, payment confirmations, court documents, or correspondence with creditors.

Step 4: File Your Dispute

You can dispute errors directly with the credit bureau online, by mail, or by phone. We recommend certified mail so you have a paper trail. The bureau has 30 days to investigate your dispute.

Step 5: Follow Up

After the investigation, the bureau must notify you of the results. If the item is verified as accurate, you can request that a statement of dispute be added to your file. If it's found to be inaccurate, it must be corrected or removed.

The dispute process can be time-consuming and frustrating — especially when creditors push back. That's why many people choose to work with a professional credit repair service. At NewCredit4You, we handle the entire process on your behalf.
